LEGO games are rad. Rad. Absolutely rad. Not only are they really family friendly, but they've always been pretty dang hilarious to us "grown ups" as well.
So what do you get when you combine all 9 Skywalker Star Wars films into one huge game? LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga.
We'll start this review with a short opinion and then we will dive into the technical stuff.
First, I love the game. If you have kids at home or are looking to relax and smash up any object in your path, you can never go wrong with the LEGO games. This one, however, feels different. An RPG-type system to level up, open world hub missions, and quirky but pretty darn good voice acting. It's my go-to right now for destress. I personally believe this is the best LEGO game ever assembled and I have no idea how it can be topped.
REVIEW TIME!
GRAPHICS
Let's start with your eyeballs. LEGO Star Wars (we'll keep it at this name for the sake of length) is a joy to look at. I have played a ton on both Playstation 5 and Xbox One S. While there is a notable difference between hardware generations, it's still pleasant to soak in your favorite planets and Star Wars landscapes.
Every character looks like who they're meant to represent and every world looks like that world. It's very immersive and what you would hope to get out of these two titans clashing.
The HUD/Menus can be a bit confusing to navigate at first but once you get the hang of them, they are fine. Nothing too special there, just...menus, I guess.
GAMEPLAY
Can you wield the power of the Force? If not, you'll still be alright here. Jump, smash, special ability. I don't mean to dumb it down but that's about all you have to do. That is TOTALLY fine.
Each character class has their own special abilities that can be used to unlock crates (containing weapons, collectible bricks, mini kits, etc) and new parts of an open world hub. A familiar type of play but again, very welcomed.
Speaking of open world hubs. You can now explore certain maps as you would in a sandbox type game. I don't mean the normal Free Play mission select of the past. I mean full on, run around complete tasks/missions for NPCs and find some of the 1,000+ blue Bricks scattered across the lands. Pick any character you have unlocked or purchased and be on your way. It's really exciting to be able to do this in a bunch of different areas since it's all brand new.
There's also space missions. Dog fights. Tie fighters. The Millenium Falcon. While you can pilot vehicles (even in the hubs) they often feel a bit clunky and slow. They are awesome to have in the game but I found myself not wanting to do more than I had to with any of the vehicles.
The new RPG system lets you level up character classes as well as a global leveling system to improve all at once. You roam around, complete missions, level objectives, and finish puzzles to gather these. Boy is it addictive. With over 1,000 in the game, you can get lost for hours upon hours just on the hunt for new Bricks. It seems daunting but it's well worth the time.
I don't feel it was needed to add the level up or skill tree system since having 300 characters and multiple classes to choose from, it's either unlikely you'll even notice a difference or won't spend enough time with a class for it to be useful to upgrade.
SOUND
It's STAR WARS. You've heard the blasters, lightsabers and droid screams. They're all hear and very well done. The voice acting is pretty stellar and often humorous. The world atmosphere is there with all the major Cantina hits.
If you liked/loved/hated any of the sounds within any of the films, prepare to have those same emotions as they are all here.
SHOULD YOU BUY THIS GAME?
