I have a Playstation 5. I do not have an Xbox Series X.
Do I feel we should be making games almost exclusively for a console I do not have?
Yes.
Here is why:
I fully believe that once you introduce a new hardware system, your focus should be on that system.
I get that demand is higher than supply and not everyone can afford the newest tech, BUT I also feel that a lot of advancements are slowed or suffered through the lifecycle of that newest tech.
When you are trying to make a huge, vast, next generation landscape with updated features but also trying to make sure to include it on a previous generation, not only does it take more time and effort to include the previous but it also lowers the capabilities of the new.
Assassin's Creed Valhalla is essentially the same game on Playstation 4 & 5. How different would it be if it were ONLY on Playstation 5 nearly 2 years ago?
I'm not saying you can't make games for last generation but when you are trying to advance features and tech, we should be aiming to get that exclusive on the improved versions.
Games have been releasing on both platforms since release and it almost give no incentive other than higher resolutions to upgrade.
Nearly 2 years in and there have only been a handful of "worth it" exclusives to the Xbox Series X or Playstation 5.
If consoles are having a 5-6 year cycle now, 2 of them are practically wasted just to play the same things we already have.
So do I think it is time we move on? Absolutely.
If only so we do not spend 750 dollars on things we already have for a few years just in hopes that we get something a bit different.
