Why Aren't Arcade Sports Games More Popular?

NBA Jam. NFL Blitz. NBA/NFL Street. NHL Hitz. MLB Slugfest.

These games were all staples in my childhood. They caused friendships to turn into rivalries, egos to inflate, and more trash talk and catchphrases than you can imagine. But why didn't their success translate over to the digital age? When you think about being able to play Blitz against ANYONE in the world, it sounds incredible. I'm not sure if the appeal of playing against someone right by your side was lost once simulation sports took over the online space but I just don't get it. Quick game types seem perfect for the modern styles of play we have now. Most of these matches took 5-10 minutes to complete and always ended up with a "just one more" type of feel to them. Whether it was activating superpowers, making an impossible play, juggling three fumbles on one play, fighting your fellow hockey opponent, or launching a 600-foot fireball homerun, these were always "OH SNAP" moments.

Over the course of the last decade, we got some Xbox Live Arcade versions of NBA Jam and NHL-type games but none of them really did well. It was a fun nostalgia trip for sure but nothing too much more than that. NBA Playgrounds made a really solid attempt recently and it was such a fun game to play. It had all the makings of these gems: Arcade gameplay, special moves, power-ups, and cartoony graphics. I thought this could be it! But I found myself playing more of the single-player modes than anything else. The career mode was fun, going through a season, but I never got that hype or high as we did back in the day. This very well could be the lack of players with headsets online or the amount of TOO much trash talk. It could even be the fact that being online meant I couldn't pause the game to go to the bathroom or make a late-night Taco Bell trip to return and continue the game where we left off.  Either way, the magic has left. The tournaments we had at home while having snacks and sodas all laid out were no more.

The late 90's and early 2000's were a fantastic time that simulation and arcade sports games could exist together. I know I sound like a boomer since there are SO many exciting games to play nowadays. I just want to experience the thrill of being "on fire" or having my friends tremble in fear as they knew their Quarterback was going to get tackled into oblivion over and over again. There are absolutely some buzzer beaters to be had in NBA 2K, some 90 yard runs to be had in Madden, and some walk off homeruns in MLB the Show, sometimes you just want a little bit of the extreme.

Maybe we will see a resurgence in these games with the upcoming Wild Card Football from the 2K Playgrounds team. I certainly hope so as this looks to be the exact thing needed to reduce the simulation fatigue that we seem to get every year.

Disney Dreamlight Valley: How To Equip And Use Your Glider

Are you wondering how to use your new Glider in Disney Dreamlight Valley? Have no fear as I am here to tell you exactly how to do it! If you happen to be blasting or skipping through menus in Disney Dreamlight Valley, you may be wondering how the heck to equip that shiny new surfboard glider you got. Well, all you have to do is go to your Wardrobe, scroll down to Gliders and select it! Easy as a hot dog! But how do you hop on this thing and use it? Well for that, first you MUST make sure your stamina bar is in the yellow. You do this by eating cooked meals that will take you above your maximum stamina bar. Once this is complete, just run for a few seconds until an icon appears in the bottom left side of the screen. Tap that button (For me, on Xbox, it's B) and PERFECTO! You'll be gliding in no time! Make sure to pay attention to your stamina bar as it will run out pretty quickly though! For more tips, opinions, and overall shenanigans, make sure to leave a comment and come back...

Movie Backlog: The Fast And The Furious (2001)

I'm a bit ashamed of myself. And, to a point, somewhat proud. I have never watched any of the Fast and Furious movies other than 2 Fast 2 Furious for some reason. So I got sick over the weekend and decided to start watching the entire season to see what I have missed over the last 20 years. Here are some of my thoughts on the first movie into this adrenaline-filled, NOS-injected, action-packed love story.  The Fast This movie starts out at a pretty fast pace. Quick racing, quick fights, all the machismo you can shake a stick at. We get to follow Brian O'Connor, played by the late Paul Walker. A blonde surfer type who is an undercover cop sent to investigate the infamous street racing gang leader, Dom Toretto (Vin Diesel). This is because a bunch of truck's have been hijacked and good ole Dommy boy is the main suspect. We find out the Brian likes tuna sandwiches. Pretty dang cool I guess. I'm not a car guy and I will never pretend to be, but what I noticed is there are ...

A.K.I Slithers into Street Fighter 6!

The second Street Fighter 6 DLC character is here! A.K.I, a brand new character to the series arrived this week, just in time for Halloween. Her slithery, unsettling, poison wielding moves will be sure to not only creep out players, but also shake things up for the online warriors out there.    She has a mix of mid and long range range moves, plus projectiles and specials that inflict poison on the opponent. Her moveset and specials take inspiration from F.A.N.G. Well... not surprising because she's an apprentice of F.A.N.G! Not only that, she's a little bit obsessed with him. Ok, maybe A LOT bit obsessed. Don’t worry though, she’s way cooler than F.A.N.G. Her design (I'm still 50/50 on the hair) and engaging move set make her way more appealing to use than her obsession.   Street Fighter's YouTube page has a great breakdown of her gameplay. If you want to learn a bit about her move set, strengths, and weaknesses, I recommend that you watch! So far I’m having a blast us...
